Nurse Practitioner


Nurse Practitioner (Mental Health)  - (HPC/RN 4) 

The North East Regional Health Authority, a statutory body under the Ministry of Health, with  responsibility for the management and delivery of  Public Health Services within the parishes of  St. Ann, St. Mary, and Portland invites  applications from suitably qualified persons to fill  the position of Nurse Practitioner (Mental Health)  of St. Ann Health Department.

Reporting to the Medical Officer (Health), the  incumbent is dedicated to promoting mental health. The MH/PNP gives comprehensive  nursing care to children, adolescents, adults and their families, performing specific  psychiatric/medical services for which the officer  has prepared. 

Qualifications

  • Registered General Nurse;
  • Minimum of five (5) years post-registration  practice in General Health, Mental Health or other areas of nursing;
  • Certification in Psychiatric Nursing (Post- Basic Programme);
  • Certificate in Nursing Administration or  Management studies from an accredited 
    institution;
  • Advanced Nursing Education: Masters level Mental Health/Psychiatric Nurse  Practitioner.

 

Responsibilities

  • Participates in developing the community  mental health services programme plan for  the assigned parish;
  • Participates in quality assurance through  departmental, parish reviews, evaluations  and problem-solving interventions;
  • Evaluates practice to ensure professional,  ethical and equitable quality health care service;
  • Demonstrates commitment to quality care,  risk management and resource utilization;
  • Conducts complete or specific physical and  mental status examination of clients to determine health status and individualized  management;
  • Develops and implements a client centered  treatment plan for patients in consultation with the Psychiatrist;
  • Performs basic psychotherapy and  counseling for patients/other family  members in accordance with identified  needs;
  • Delegate care functions to appropriate staff  members;
  • Supervises staff members who perform  delegated functions;
  • Facilitate staff development through on- going educational activities;
  • Identifies learning needs of members of the  health-care team and participates in developing programmes to meet those  needs;
  • Promotes advancement of the profession  through participation in professional organization;
  • Contributes to nursing knowledge by  conducting research geared towards  improving evidence-based practice
  • Utilizes information from research to carry  out evidence-based approach to problem 
    solving and decision-making.

  • Knowledge and skills in crisis interventions and psychological first aid;
  • Knowledge and skills in de-escalation and  restraining techniques;
  • Good physical and mental wellbeing;
  • Understanding of ethical and legal issues  related to job function;
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism  and integrity;
  • Demonstrate skill in mentoring/coaching  and teaching.

 

Required competencies

  • Undertakes clinical, educational, administrative and public relations  responsibilities within the parish/health  district;
  • Collaborates with other members of the  health staff as well as other agencies in the execution of duties;
  • Assesses, diagnoses, manages person with psychiatric and psychological  responsibilities issues;
  • Participates in extensive health  promotion/educational activities.
